Murdoch University Melville FC is busy preparing for the 2018 season.

The 2018 Mens’ State League squad will take on a fresh, new approach this year and we look forward to competing under our new name, in our spectacular new facilities wearing our new colours.

The expansion to Murdoch is further evidence of the ambition the club is showing to become one of the State’s leading lights. The MSL Squad are very positive about the opportunity that playing at Murdoch will offer. The chance to train and play matches on a surface conducive to attractive, high tempo football should provide us with a great chance to be competitive at all three levels this season.

The 2018 coaching team will be led by Gavin Brown who has been Head Coach since 2015. Gavin completed his B Licence in 2014 and is travelling to the AIS in Canberra in February this year to begin his A Licence. Gavin will oversee the coaching of the whole MSL squad, with his priority being the match day performances of the First Team. He will be looking to build on the impressive form shown by the League team in the second half of last season where the club won 8 and drew 2 of their last 13 fixtures, narrowly missing out on a play off spot.

The Reserves will be coached by John Humphreys. John’s squad is a very young and talented group who finished in the top half of the 2017 reserve league. The majority of the players were part of John’s 2016 U18 squad who won the State League 2 title.

Our U18 squd will be coached for the second season running by Friday Zico. Friday is a former WA NPL player who also has International caps for the South Sudan. He made an impressive start to his coaching career, finishing 2nd last year with 17 wins, two draws and only one loss in the league.

Season 2017 saw Melville City FC make the NPL Junior finals in all 5 categories (12s-16s). The U16 team were crowned State Champions beating Stirling 3-0 in the final, a remarkable feat considering this was only Melville’s second season in this format. The MSL are delighted to have retained some of the players who were part of this achievement and hope that they can be part of the future success of the club at senior level.

The new MUM FC has pulled off a huge coup in attracting former A League Coach and AIS Academy Director, Mark Jones to the club to fulfil the role of Technical Director.  The MSL coaching staff and players look forward to having Mark on board and eagerly anticipate the positive influence he will have at senior level.

First up for the MSL squad is the Football West Night Night Series which begins on February 9th. The first team have been drawn in a tough group comprising of three State League 1 teams: South West Phoenix, Mandurah and Rockingham, as well as Kelmscott and Gosnells form State League 2.

Pre-season training will kick off at Murdoch University on synthetic from Tuesday 9th January and will train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in preparation for the league and cup campaigns. New and returning players are expected at 6.30 for a 7pm start.

The support of all MUMFC members is welcome as we try to make match days a fun and welcoming experience for all ages. Please consult the following link for dates and times of home games and come along to support the boys in their quest for promotion!
